Material

Dry cast limestone offers the texture, appearance
and durability of carved limestone at a fraction of
the cost. Dry cast limestone, a material that dates to
Roman times, has porosity that makes it frost-proof.
Longshadow Planters, Garden Ornaments, and Site
Furnishings are suitable for all-season exterior use.
The thick, porous walls of Longshadow Planters keep
the roots of plants cool and moist during summer,
allowing lush plantings.

Color

Longshadow is hand made using limestone,
sand and cement. Variations in the color of the
limestone causes slight variations in the color of
Longshadow products. The natural warm white
color of Longshadow is similar to buff Bedford
Indiana limestone. The photograph on the left
shows a Munstead 19 Planter, LS 9042 with a
patina of green mosses that developed within
weeks of an application of spoiled milk, and
next to it, the color of a newly cast
Chesapeake 24 Planter, LS 9106.

Patinas

Due to natural characteristics of dry cast
limestone,a patina of green and gray mosses
and lichens develop over time. The photograph
on the left shows a nine year old Lake Bluff 32
Planter,LS 9044,with a patina of mosses. The
Japanese Painted Ferns and Astilbees planted
in 1994 have thrived in this woodland planter.
The other photograph shows an eight year old
Lake Bluff 32 with the patina of natural aging
developed in a sunny location. The Asters and
Sedums have self seeded in this planter.

Characteristics & Product Care

into a custom-built wood crate.
Smaller pieces
are shipped in double wall cartons.

Longshadow Planters, Garden Ornaments
and Site Furnishings are suitable for
exterior use summer and winter.

Dry cast limestone is durable, but like
natural limestone, can be damaged if handled
incorrectly. Please read and follow the installation
instructions provided with each item. All planters
and pedestals are supplied with drain holes. Drainage
must be assured with each installation.

Longshadow Planters, Garden Ornaments and Site

cartons attached to pallets, via common carrier truck.
A fork lift or a loading dock is recommended for
removing the pallets from the truck.

Setting up the Garden Ornament Complete,
LS 6522 in the garden of Margaret P. Rea
in Sewickley, Pennsylvania.

Using packing blanket to pad the edges of the
Glencoe 42 & Square Base 36, LS 9085.

Most Longshadow Planters, Garden Ornaments
and Site Furnishings are heavy and require a level
concrete footing appropriate for local conditions.
Do not attempt to lift Longshadow pieces without
sufficient equipment and help.

Clean, endless polyester round slings or a ball
harness attached to the forks of a fork lift are
required for positioning the parts of larger pieces.
Padding is required to protect edges when moving
planters. An experienced masonry contractor should
be involved when installing larger pieces. Detailed
installation instructions are provided with each item.

Longshadow Planters are supplied with drainage
mats. Use felt side up over the drain hole. Use a
soil-less growing medium that drains well. In areas
of heavy winter freezing, remove soil during winter.
Or,as an alternative, use lids to prevent freezing of
accumulated water.

Moving Longshadow Planters, Garden Ornaments, and Site Furnishings requires the use of harnesses or slings.
